The mechanism used by most programs for generating the table of contents is what we might call style-tracking; one or more styles are designated as being associated with the table of contents. When the table of contents is created, all text in the designated style(s) is added to the list of items, usually with the appropriate page number next to it. InDesign has three commands associated with the creation of tables of contents, all of which are found under the Layout menu: Table of Contents Styles, Table of Contents and Update Table of Contents. The Table of Contents Styles command is used to define the settings and attributes of the table of contents. When you choose the command, you are given the choice of either editing the built-in, default table of contents or creating a new one. As this choice implies, the table of contents facility can be used to create a list of any items occurring within the document, as long as the text associated with the items uses styles.

The first TOC setting is the title which will appear at the top of the list of items, along with the style in which you would like the title to appear. Next, you need to specify which styles you would like to include in your TOC. All of the styles which your document contains are shown in a list on the right. Simply double-click on each of the styles you wish to include in your TOC, in order of priority. Finally, you need to specify the attributes of each of the styles which are to be included in the TOC. The key attributes are the level, the style you wish to use to list items at that level and the position (or omission) of the page number.

Once the table of contents style definition is complete, you are ready to create the table of contents itself. To do this, simply choose Table of Contents from the Layout menu, choose which table of contents you wish to create and click OK. The cursor will then change to the loaded text icon; at which point you click to place your text. If you modify the settings of your table of contents at any time, just use the Layout – Update Table of Contents to bring your listing up to date.

In exactly the same way that Excel allows you to hide columns and rows, it is also possible to hide entire worksheets. Hiding a worksheet is particularly useful if your workbook contains a lot of sheets. Naturally, once hidden, worksheets can be made visible again by using the Unhide command. It is possible to hide either an single sheet or a group of sheets. However worksheets can only be unhidden a single sheet at a time.

To hide just one sheet, just right-click on the sheet tab and choose Hide. The corresponding worksheet will then simply disappear. There is also a ribbon command which will do exactly the same thing. First, you highlight the sheet by clicking on its tab and then, in the Cells section of the Home Tab of Excel Ribbon, choose Format-Visibility-Hide and Unhide-Hide.

To hide more than one sheet, simply highlight the sheets by clicking on the first holding down the Control key and clicking on each of the others. Next, right-click on one of the highlighted sheet tabs and choose Hide.

To make a hidden worksheet visible again, you can right-click on any sheet tab and choose Unhide. The Unhide dialog then appears. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to select more than one sheet to unhide; if you try Control-click or Shift-click, you’ll see that only one sheet can be highlighted. Highlight the name of the sheet that you want to make visible and click OK.

If you prefer, you can also use the Excel Ribbon command Format-Visibility-Hide and Unhide-UnHide Sheet. When the Unhide dialog box appears, highlight the sheet you would like to unhide and click OK. You will notice that when sheets are unhidden they very conveniently return to the position that they originally occupied.

When Microsoft took the decision to release free “Express” editions of various elements within their industry-standard Visual Studio software, it came as quite a surprise to many people. In Dreamweaver, template pages are used to maintain consistency within the site. The template contains the entire layout of the page and consists of locked and editable regions. When the template is applied to a page, only the editable regions of the page can be edited. Typically, locked regions will contain elements which are common to all pages in the site or to all pages in one section of a site, things such as logos, banners and navigation links. The editable region(s) will contain the main content of each page.

Whenever you change a Dreamweaver template, the user is offered the option of updating all pages based on that template. This makes the template feature a very powerful tool for updating a website and maintaining consistency across multiple pages.

ASP.NET master pages work in a similar way to Dreamweaver templates, with the master page containing fixed regions and content placeholders. There is one key difference, however. In Dreamweaver, all of the markup in the master page is copied into each page based on the template with each update and each updated page must then be uploaded to the server. In ASP.NET, the pages based on the master (the content pages) contain a link to the master but do not repeat the markup found on the master. The ASP.NET engine generates the necessary markup at runtime. This means that to update the common elements of an ASP.NET site, you only need to update the master page(s). There is non need to update the content pages based on the master(s).

To use this feature, you will naturally have to begin by created the character style or styles which will become nested in the paragraph style. Simply choose Character Styles from the Type sub-menu of the Windows menu then choose New Character Style from the Character Styles panel menu. When you click on the New Line Style button, a new item is added to the Nested Line Styles area of the dialog. Each item contains just two sections. Firstly, we have the drop-down menu from which we specify the character style to be nested and, secondly, there is a field in which you enter the number of lines.

The first thing we need is a set of data which can easily be converted into a readable chart. It is normally best to plot data which is a summary of your information. It is also useful if your data is arranged in columns or rows with headings at the top of columns or on the left of rows.

An example of information which would be easy to convert into a chart is a selection containing two columns with data on the left and the corresponding values on the right. When the chart is created, the labels are placed on what is variously known as the category axis, horizontal axis or x axis; while values are arranged on the y axis. Within the plot area, we can also choose to display grid lines. These make it easy to read the value associated with each point on the chart.
