Review of the Samsung UE55B7020
Out of the Package – First Views: Wow – most people are flabbergasted by just how slim the UE55B7020 is – in fact less than an inch and a half in depth. The black sheer finish to the border of the television looks great, as does the thin see-through connection between the television and the stand. An added bonus point is that Samsung has included all of the key parts within the set – several manufacturers have required viewers to find a location for a separate box for such objects as the Freeview tuner.
Audio Quality: Most contemporary Televisions have inadequate quality sound outputs and the UE55B7020 is no exception. The thickness of the UE55B7020 is too little to allow a passable audio system. It would be sensible to look at adding a surround audio system.
Screen Quality: This is the key advantage of the UE55B7020 over its competitors, in that it has replaced fluorescent backlighting with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). What a number of reviewers haven’t understood is that the monitor itself still uses tried and tested LCD technology. The advantages of LEDs as opposed to fluorescent tubes are:
* An LED backlight technique uses a system of grids to produce a more uniform backlight across the screen.
* LEDs can make a wonderful black – which has not been feasible with LCD TVs until currently.
* The picture can react more rapidly.
* The choice of colours that can be displayed is wider.
Connections: The UE55B7020 has four HDMI connections, two USB, and a LAN (Local Area Network) one – future proof for now. With a separate, easily bought wireless USB stick, the UE55B7020 can access any home wireless network and as well, any USB memory device can be used to allow it to play most multimedia file formats.
There are in fact two remotes. The main one curves over at one end (intended to rest on an armchair arm?). A tad bizarre to hold at first, but you get used to it. The second, smaller remote just allows volume power and channel changes.
Environmental considerations: In use the UE55B7020 uses merely as much power as a light bulb – a large amount less than nearly all modern TVs.
To Wrap Up: The UE55B7020 has just distinctly ordinary sound output, as with most flatscreen TVs. However the rich colours and deep blacks it produces outperform other similarly priced televisions.
