Getting a Grip on Your Telephone Usage
If there is one thing that is enhanced our lives more than any other, it’s the simple telephone. The unfortunate part about the telephone is the fact that it is also the piece of equipment that we often find to be the most frustrating. The reason why this is the case is because it interrupts our lives and often tends to dictate exactly what we are going to do. Here is a short primer to help you to take control of this item that often controls us.
Something that everybody who uses the telephone needs to understand is the fact that they are in control of their telephone usage, not the telephone. This is where many of us tend to fall short, simply because we feel that we need to pick the phone up and talk, every time it rings.
There is something that you need to understand about the human anatomy as far as this is concerned. The hand and the arm are extensions of the body and these are directly controlled by the brain. Just because a telephone is ringing does not necessarily mean that you need to use these two extensions in order to pick it up and lift it to your ear. Don’t allow it to control you, and it will free up much of your time to be able to use for other tasks.
Whenever you do take the time to talk on the telephone, you need to make sure that you give it your full attention. Although many of us would consider ourselves to be multitaskers, it has been determined through scientific research that very few of us are able to multitask effectively. Whenever you’re on the telephone and trying to do other things, it will become obvious to the person whom you are talking to.
Something else for you to keep in mind, especially whenever you’re trying to have a good conversation is the fact that people like to talk about themselves. You can dominate the conversation by talking about yourself or give the person on the other end of the line the opportunity to do it. If you allow them to discuss themselves, and perhaps even their problems, you will be known as a great listener.
If you’re using the telephone for work, make sure that you use it effectively at all times. This is also true whenever you’re leaving a voicemail. Most people only leave their name and telephone number but it is actually an opportunity for you to give a brief announcement about whatever it is that you are trying to get across to them. Although it would be a bad idea for you to try and sell them on the voicemail, priming them for the next conversation is an excellent choice.
The telephone can either be a great tool for us to use or it can end up being a noose around our necks. Make sure that you use it as it is intended and this piece of technology will be a benefit that will work well for you.
