Using the Area Code System to Your Benefit
Getting a phone call on a repeated basis and not knowing who it is that is calling you can be rather frustrating. The fortunate thing is, you’re not left without things that you can do about it and the area code that is calling you can be one of the most telling things of all.
These came about as a result of the phone company splitting up and going with the numerical system instead of the old system that they were using. At that time, they began to assign these three digit codes to various areas of the country, although they did not use all of the available area codes at that particular time. For that reason, each area of the country has its own area code and at times, more than one.
As the population continued to grow and more phones came into existence, additional area codes were used as a result. That is why you might have one single area code that takes up an entire city or you might have an area code that spans across several smaller towns and perhaps some medium-size cities as well. It is also possible that one single city will incorporate more than one area code if there are enough telephones existing within the city to warrant it.
Cell phones have also added to the number of area codes that are in use, especially considering their popularity. Some of the area codes that were assigned are done so specifically for use with cellular telephones and they are getting used up rather quickly. Fax machines are also something that are using up area codes quickly as most businesses have at least one dedicated fax line. That is why it is not always a matter of simply looking up the area code to see where the call is coming from.
By looking at the area code, you will get a general idea of where the individual who is calling you is located. It could be a specific region of the country but it may also span several states in some rare cases. Some of the area codes go across an area that is quite large but typically, there are too many cellular telephones and use for this to be the case any longer. That is why the area code gives you more of a specific idea of where they are calling from.
If you would like to nail it down a little bit further, there are searches that are available on the Internet which help you reverse engineer a phone number and find out exactly who it is that has been calling you. If they were calling from a landline, this information is commonly available to the public but cellular telephone information is not always available because of privacy issues.
The best thing that you can do is to look for this information on the Internet and if you are unable to find it, pay a small fee in order to hire someone to find it for you. Although it is unfortunate that you might have to pay something in order to find out this information, it is the only way that you are guaranteed to do so.
