A voicemail system at its most basic is an answering machine but many voice mail systems are much more advanced. Some features generally found with voice mail include a place to store messages for future delivery, voice introduction to forwarded messages, using different greetings depending on the caller, transfer calls to another number, sending messages to more then one voice mailbox, answering any phone at the same time and paging another number if you receive a message.
All of the voice messages are saved on a hard drive and are recorded just as you would copy or create a CD. Voice mail became popular because the cost of phone calls decreased enough that businesses began to use the phone as the main form of communication. Also the number of secretaries decreased as labor rates increased so many callers could not reach their intended person.
The very first voice mail system was a PBX system used by corporations and businesses. As voicemail became more popular other voice mail systems became available including stand-alone systems.
A PBX voice mail system was the first ever used and this is currently used for many corporations and large businesses. There are also stand-alone voice mail systems available. The basic parts of the voice mail system have a telephone interface, user directory and software found on the system disks, disk drives and disk controllers that store all of the incoming messages, and a central processor responsible for running the software. The very best voice mail systems are the ones that are the easiest to use both for the caller and the voice mailbox owner.
