Helping To Protect Our Children On The Internet

Our children are using the computer and internet technologies to wider and wider areas. This has given us many benefits but at the same time has given us many problematic situations, as well.

We are unable to monitor our children and teenagers 24 hours per day as they use the computer. Especially during late night hours, children and teenagers can use the computer freely and end up in situations that may not be so helpful.

To make sure that your child and teenager remains safe while using the internet, there are a few things that you should consider doing to help.

First, make sure you talk to your child or teenager about responsible behavior on the internet and computer. Remind them not to give out personal information like your house’s address or your child or teenager’s full name. Also tell your child or teenager that often times the person actually behind the computer on the other end is someone quite different from who they are pretending to be.

Also, you should remember that dangerous situations can occur even with other children or teenagers that your child or teenager already knows.

IMing or instant messaging can be an area where these types of inappropriate situations often occur. The quick messages back and forth between two or more parties often results in inappropriate soliciations that would not occur in face to face meetings.

Talking to your child or teenager should always be the first step in safety but sometimes you will need to take stronger measures. In this case, you can use computer software that has been recently created to monitor your child or teenager’s online use and alert you if any inappropriate conversations or activity is being taken online.
